About the Foundation
From its Gilded Age to present day, Hartford’s arts community has created a quality of life that resonates throughout the Capitol Region. Roberts founders recognized how important the arts are to maintaining the vitality of their beloved city, and 60 years ago created a foundation that would ensure Hartford’s rich cultural heritage thrived for generations.
Today the Roberts Foundation is unique in its commitment to support the arts for arts’ sake, and to achieve this mission, the organization seeks to fund exceptional aesthetic experiences that reflect, celebrate and elevate the human spirit.
Geographic Area Served
The foundation limits funding to organizations located in Hartford County, and gives priority to arts nonprofits in the following cities and towns:
Hartford, Newington, Bloomfield, South Windsor, East Hartford, West Hartford, Farmington, Wethersfield, New Britain, Windsor
What We Fund?
The foundation focuses its support on the creation, presentation and performance of works of art through three grant programs:
- Excellence in the Arts grants: Our quarterly grant program
- Creation of New Work Initiative: Now a quarterly grant program as well
- Equity in the Arts initiative: These grants are awarded at the discretion of the board and not through a competitive grants process.

Creation of New Work
This special program provides support for artists in the Greater Hartford community and that the community as a whole will benefit from the resulting new work.
Equity In the Arts
We stand resolute against the racism and injustice that motivated these horrific acts as well as the institutionalized complicity that has constrained the lives of innumerable African Americans for more than 400 years without acknowledgment.
